De oorsprong van het hofje ligt bij een ouder hofje in de Noordmolenstraat dat, kort na de reformatie, in 1589 werd gesticht door Hubrecht Corsten, Heer van Belois (een heerlijkheid bij Brouwershaven). Deze vermogende inwoner van Schiedam stichtte 12 huisjes (later uitgebreid tot 29) die gratis werden aangeboden aan arme bejaarden.

Aan het begin van de 20ste eeuw verkeerde dit eerste hofje in dermate deplorabele staat dat de regenten geen heil meer zagen in renovatie. Naar ontwerp van de architect Stahlie werd een nieuw complex van 36 huisjes en een regentenkamer gerealiseerd in een nieuwe wijk in Schiedam-west. In de jaren tachtig kreeg het complex de status van rijksmonument als vroeg voorbeeld van (moderne) sociale volkshuisvesting.

The origins of the courtyard lie in an older courtyard in the Noordmolenstraat that was founded in 1589, shortly after the Reformation, by Hubrecht Corsten, Lord of Belois (a lordship near Brouwershaven). This wealthy resident of Schiedam founded 12 houses (later expanded to 29) that were offered free of charge to poor elderly people.

At the beginning of the 20th century, this first courtyard was in such a deplorable state that the regents no longer saw any benefit in renovation. Based on a design by the architect Stahlie, a new complex of 36 houses and a regent’s room was built in a new district in Schiedam-west. In the eighties, the complex was given the status of national monument as an early example of (modern) social housing.
